The pollen project is to devise, create and maintain a network for Psychology lecturers. Based in Scotland, though with relevance internationally, this blog has been designed as a starting point for the network: a space in which lecturers and teaching staff in psychology and related disciplines can create databases of learning materials, share good practice and collaborate on teaching and learning projects.

The broad aims of pollen are to:
(1) Undertake and support small research and service development projects as proposed by Scottish lecturers in psychology.
(2) Organise seminars on teaching and learning in psychology.
(3) Submit research proposals for further funding on teaching and learning in psychology in conjunction with Scottish psychology departments.
(4) Create a website to promote the work of pollen.
(5) Promote and disseminate good practice in teaching and learning within psychology in Scotland.

PBL heaven

This page of the pollen blog will be dedicated to all things PBL (Problem-Based Learning, and its related approaches such as Inquiry Based Learning). We'll use this as a space to bring together as much as we can in this area, particularly those bits that relate to PBL as it might be used in psychology teaching, or the psychological elements of PBL.

PBL at the University of Strathclyde, Psychology programme
A project funded partly by the University of Strathclyde's, and with financial support from the Higher Education Academy's Psychology Network, is currently developing PBL modules across (almost all) years of the Psychology programme at Strathclyde. This is supported by a new peer-tutor scheme which is being tested out with 3rd and 4th year students supporting their peers in other years during PBL sessions.  As the PBL and peer tutor materials are refined, evaluated and further developed, these will be made available on this site wherever possible.

NEW PHD TO BEGIN IN SEPTEMBER 2012
Dr Sally Wiggins, University of Strathclyde, has recently been awarded one of the Higher Education Academy's new doctoral programme awards. The studentship will examine social interaction within PBL groups to identify communication strategies that will help to support learning and collaboration between peers. Gillian Hendry will be taking up the studentship, and work on the PhD will begin in September 2012.

This site is a great resource for finding PBL problems to use or adapt in your own classes. There is also the opportunity to add your own to the repository. Problems are divided up by discipline (so there is a psychology section).
